 What is CSS?

CSS stands for Central Superior Services. It is basically an examination consisting of 10-12 papers (depending on choice of optional subjects), a psychological test and an interview. Candidates successful in all these modules become part of civil service/ bureaucracy and serve in different grades starting from BPS-17 in Government of Pakistan.

MPT Exam

Recently, Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has introduced MCQs based screening test. Only candidates scoring passing marks (66/200) in this test are eligible to appear in the written module. Its score is not calculated in the aggregate marks.

Written Exam

There are following two sets of papers/subjects in this module which carry a total of 1200 marks:

  1. 06 compulsory subjects - 600 marks
  2. 04-06 optional subjects - 600 marks

A candidate needs to score 600 aggregate marks to pass this phase.

Psychological Exam

This module does not carry separate marks but it is used to evaluate candidates' suitability for civil services. It comprises different kinds of tasks related to quantitative tests, personality tests, group discussion, command task and most importantly, interview with a panel of psychologists.

Viva Voce

This module carries 300 marks. It is basically an interview with the panel of FPSC. A candidate has to score at least 100 marks to pass this phase. It is mostly about personal/ professional life of a candidate and covers compulsory/ optional subjects as well.

Note:

  1. CSS is one of the most difficult exams.
  2. Passing ratio/ percentage is between 2-3%.
  3. A candidate might not be selected even after clearing all the phases due to limited number of vacancies-to-be-filled.
